An unusual "road accident" occurred in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.
A Kamchatka shrew appeared on the path of a snowmobile of state inspectors who guard the Lazovsky section (primarily the Shchapinsky spruce forests, to prevent fires and tree felling).
The insectivorous animal, whose body weight is about 5 grams, ran along the snowmobile track and darted right under the skis of the car.
"Of course, we immediately stopped and began to examine it. Everything is fine: alive, no injuries. It warmed up so much afterwards that it did not want to get off my hand," said the reserve inspector Spas Tarasov.
The Kamchatka shrew was first described in 1972. A species of the genus of shrews of the shrew family. On the peninsula, it mainly lives near the Kambalny Bay, Lake Azhabachye, and the outskirts of the village of Milkovo. The animal is quite small. Average body length is 57 mm, average weight is 5 grams.
