In the center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Sunday, February 18th, Maslenitsa was celebrated. A concert program, contests and folk games were prepared for the citizens. Photo-correspondent Anastasia Erokhina visited the festive square.
The holiday began at 13 o’clock and lasted until evening. One of the most spectacular entertainments was competitions for the strongmen “Pancake post”. The most clever participants who managed to get on the 9-meter column, got valuable prizes. In particular, a TV and a laptop. Also guests of the holiday chose the brightest beauty in the contest “Russian Beauty”. The townspeople were entertained by artists of local collectives. The main dish of the holiday, according to tradition, was to be pancakes. But for some reason they were sold only in one tent. At the same time there were a lot of kebabs.
The culmination of the holiday was the burning of the stuffed pancake week. As the ancient belief says, this custom purifies people, giving health and a good mood on the eve of spring.
