On the morning of October 22, a strong wind lifted ash from previous eruptions from the southern slope of the Shiveluch volcano to a height of 3 kilometers, the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
According to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), the ash plume stretched 270 kilometers in an easterly direction towards the Bering Sea. There are no settlements along its path.
According to scientists, moderate activity of Shiveluch continues. Ash emissions to a height of up to 10 kilometers are possible at any time. They can pose a danger to aviation. The volcano has been assigned an orange (high) aviation hazard code.
The height of Shiveluch is 3,283 meters. It is the northernmost active volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The giant is located 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The nearest settlement, the village of Klyuchi, is 50 kilometers away from its foot. Shiveluch is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka.
