The ash plume from the Shiveluch volcano has extended more than 40 km from the giant at an altitude of up to 2.5 km above sea level, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported.
“KVERT video and satellite data show that strong winds are lifting ash from the southern slopes of the Shiveluch volcano, the plume of raised ash extends approximately 42 km to the east-southeast of the volcano,” KVERT said.
The eruption of the volcano continues. There is a danger of ash emissions to an altitude of up to 10 km above sea level. An orange aviation hazard code has been established for the volcano.
Shiveluch is one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. It includes three main structures: the Old Shiveluch volcano, an ancient caldera, and the active Young Shiveluch volcano. The height of the lava dome of Molodoy Shiveluch is 2500 m. The volcano is located at the intersection of the Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian island arcs, 50 km from the village of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatsky district and 450 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The age of the giant is estimated at 60-70 thousand years.
