Shiveluch volcano threatens several Kamchatka villages with ashfall
Jan 27, 2025
Strong winds on the afternoon of January 25 lifted ash from previous eruptions from the southern slope of the Shiveluch volcano to a height of up to three kilometers, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported.

The ash plume stretched 70 kilometers from the giant in a southeasterly direction towards the Kamchatka Gulf. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the settlement of Ust-Kamchatsk, the villages of Krutoberegovo and Nikolskoye are on its path. A small amount of ash fall is not excluded there.

According to scientists, the eruption of the volcano continues. Ash emissions to a height of up to 10 kilometers may occur at any moment. This may affect international and low-flying aircraft. The volcano has been assigned an orange (high) aviation hazard code.

The height of Shiveluch is 3,283 meters. It is the northernmost active volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The giant is located 450 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The nearest settlement, the village of Klyuchi, is 50 kilometers away from its foot. Shiveluch is one of the most active volcanoes on the peninsula.
