Total lunar eclipse observed at Kamchatka volcano station

Total lunar eclipse observed at Kamchatka volcano station

Mar 16, 2025
On March 14, residents of the northern regions saw a bloody moon. The total lunar eclipse was also observed by employees of the Kamchatka Volcano Station in Klyuchi.

"We were unable to see the initial phase, it was still light, and the Moon was very low above the horizon at that time," said researcher at the volcano station Yuri Demyanchuk. Let us recall that the spectacle of the bloody moon also impressed residents of the northern regions of the peninsula. During a total eclipse, the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow and gradually loses its brightness. But due to refraction in the planet's atmosphere, some of the light still reaches it. And this is the red part of the spectrum, since the blue is scattered in the atmosphere. The phenomenon is called the "blood moon" because of the deep copper-orange glow that is observed at this time.

Residents of the northern regions of the peninsula were impressed by the bloody moon with an eclipse.

As reported by the Kamchatka North Telegram channel, residents of the Karaginsky District, Tigil village and Palana settlement shared photos of the fascinating astronomical phenomenon. According to information from open sources, the lunar eclipse occurred on March 14 from 09:26 to 10:31 Moscow time. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, it was theoretically possible to see it, but northerners turned out to be sharper-eyed. The bloody, or red, moon occurs during a total eclipse. At this moment, the moon passes through the Earth's shadow and gradually loses its brightness, and its surface acquires reddish hues. The phenomenon is called the "blood moon" because of the deep copper-orange glow that is observed during a total eclipse. This year, another eclipse will occur on September 7. The moon will again be completely immersed in the Earth's shadow.
