Tourists in Kamchatka Advised to Stay Away from Avachinsky Volcano

Jul 24, 2025

Avachinsky Volcano, often referred to as Kamchatka’s "home volcano," has become unsafe for tourists and local residents, according to the regional emergency services.

The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) reported that from July 20 to 22, steam and gas emissions reaching up to 300 meters high were observed above the volcano’s crater.

A glow from high-temperature volcanic gas was also detected on the western slope. The increased activity is linked to heightened seismic activity in the Pacific Ocean.

Emergency officials have urged locals and visitors to exercise caution and remain vigilant when near the Avachinsky-Koryaksky volcano group. They also advised against attempting to hike to Avachinsky’s crater.

Steam and gas emissions may lead to hazardous concentrations of volcanic gases, posing serious health and safety risks.

Avachinsky is an active volcano, with its last eruption recorded on October 5, 2001. It is located about 30 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Due to its proximity to the regional capital and the town of Yelizovo, it is one of the most accessible and frequently climbed volcanoes in the area, often attracting large groups. Along with Koryaksky and Kozelsky volcanoes, Avachinsky is considered a "home" volcano for locals.
