On August 4, the Klyuchevskoy volcano on Kamchatka ejected an ash column reaching an altitude of 7.5 kilometers above sea level, according to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT).
Scientists report that the ash plume extended 50 kilometers northeast of the volcano. The eruption is ongoing, and further ash emissions—potentially up to 10 kilometers high—could occur at any time, posing a hazard to aircraft. Aviation authorities have issued an orange warning code (the second-highest alert level) for the area.
Standing at over 4,750 meters, Klyuchevskoy is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia. It is located 360 km northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with the nearest settlement, the village of Klyuchi, situated about 30 km away.
