Residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky have once again witnessed a rare natural event – a pod of orcas has been spotted in the waters of Avacha Bay. Video evidence of their presence has spread across social media, clearly showing the distinctive black fins of these marine mammals rising above the water's surface. Such visits are infrequent, making it particularly noteworthy that their last appearance in the bay was recorded very recently, on July 27th.
Orcas, the largest members of the dolphin family, typically remain in the open ocean and only approach the shore under exceptional circumstances, most often in search of food. According to scientists, these mammals are highly communicative, using a range of specific sounds—from whistles to unique pulsed calls specific to each family.
Despite their impressive size and predatory nature, orcas rarely show aggression towards humans. Their behavior is generally only altered under conditions of stress, threat, or competition for mates and territory.
Orcas are found in many regions of the world's oceans. The waters off Kamchatka are also part of their hunting grounds, a fact confirmed by their latest appearance in Avacha Bay.
