Authorities in Kamchatka have issued a severe warning to tourists and extreme sports enthusiasts, urging them to avoid the area around the erupting Klyuchevskoy Volcano. Scientists from the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) report that the eruption is ongoing, with possible lava flows and ash plumes reaching up to 8 kilometers high. The volcano has been assigned an "orange" aviation hazard code.
According to emergency services, the greatest danger is to so-called "wild" or independent tourists who rent small aircraft to visit the volcano during its active phase. Officials have stated that this is extremely dangerous and could be fatal.
Standing at over 4,750 meters, Klyuchevskoy is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia. The nearest settlement, the village of Klyuchi, is located 30 kilometers away.
