The Ice Formations of Vilyuchinsky Waterfall in Kamchatka Pose a Deadly Risk to Tourists

Jan 20, 2026

The "Volcanoes" Network of Natural Parks on the Kamchatka Peninsula has issued a stark reminder about the dangers of Vilyuchinsky Waterfall, warning that a "selfie under an icicle" could be one's last photo. This warning was reported by the RIA "KAMCHATKA-INFORM".

Vilyuchinsky Waterfall is one of the iconic winter landmarks of Kamchatka. A massive frozen pillar of ice, formed on the northwestern slope of the volcano bearing the same name, draws thousands of visitors each year. Social media is increasingly filled with images of tourists standing right next to or directly beneath the immense ice wall and its overhangs.

However, this "crystal castle" conceals a threat many fail to recognize. A winter waterfall is a dynamic and highly unstable structure. The ice is constantly "alive," expanding and contracting with temperature changes. Internally, it becomes porous and fragile. Icicles and ice masses can break off not just due to warmth, but simply under their own weight.

The speed of ice falling from the height of a multi-story building is tremendous. Even a small fragment the size of a fist becomes a deadly projectile. And when a multi-ton block collapses, there is virtually no chance of survival for anyone within a radius of several dozen meters.

The most tragic confirmation of these dangers occurred on January 7, 2021. On that day, a group of 10 tourists was at the base of the frozen waterfall. A section from the upper part of the ice detached, fell onto a lower ice block, and then a cascade of ice fragments collapsed onto the people below. A 40-year-old man was killed instantly. A 10-year-old boy and his 51-year-old father sustained severe injuries and were airlifted to a regional hospital, where doctors were able to save their lives.

The Park Network urges tourists to enjoy Kamchatka's natural wonders safely. It is crucial to maintain a safe distance and admire the waterfall's beauty from afar. In fact, the most impressive photos that truly capture its scale are taken from a distance of 30 to 50 meters.
