In a daring and triumphant performance, Kamchatka athlete Nikita Filippov claimed victory at the European Ski Mountaineering Championships held in Azerbaijan. The competitions are taking place at the Shahdag Mountain Resort. On March 4th, Europe's top athletes battled it out in the Sprint discipline.
Nikita Filippov, a representative of Kamchatka and the silver medalist of the 2026 Olympics, finished first in his semifinal heat. In the final, he was running in third place during the first half of the race. However, he executed an incredibly risky maneuver, fighting his way to the front at the ski descent and refusing to let go of the lead, ultimately securing the gold medal.
"European Champion – this is my first gold medal on the international stage. As I said, you have to go for it. Check out this overtake on the descent! The track was very icy. I went all in. It was either I come first, or I wipe everyone out while overtaking," Nikita Filippov said after the finish.
The skimo athlete from Kamchatka completed the course in 2 minutes and 58.6 seconds. Switzerland's Thibault Anselmet secured second place, finishing just 1.2 seconds behind. Spain's Ot Ferrer Martinez took third, trailing the leader by 1.6 seconds.
"This international season has been an emotional rollercoaster: two bronze medals at the World Cup, Olympic silver, and now European Championship gold. Am I still dreaming?" the brilliant athlete wondered.
