Seven Natural Landmarks Ranked in Kronotsky Reserve and South Kamchatka Sanctuary

Jun 8, 2026

Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the South Kamchatka Sanctuary have released a ranking of their most popular natural attractions among visitors. The list features seven unique natural landmarks.

According to the administration of the Kronotsky State Nature Biosphere Reserve, the top spot belongs to the Valley of Geysers. Here, visitors can observe every known type of hydrothermal feature, from fumaroles to geysers. In second place is the Uzon Volcano caldera—a true natural museum of hot springs, cold streams, thermal and freshwater lakes, mud pots, and small volcanoes. Third place goes to Kurilskoye Lake. This crater lake, surrounded by volcanoes, is the deepest on the Kamchatka Peninsula, reaching a maximum depth of 316 meters. It hosts the largest sockeye salmon run in Asia, and brown bears gather along its shores to fish and raise their young.

Fourth place is awarded to Cape Siyushk on Kurilskoye Lake, which offers a panoramic view of three active volcanoes: Kambalny, Ilinsky, and Dikiy Greben. Fifth place is Kronotskoye Lake, the largest freshwater body in the northern Far East, formed over 12,000 years ago. The second-to-last spot by visitor numbers is the Ipuin Ranger Station on the banks of the Levaya Shchapina River. It serves as the first stop on the "Winter Fairy Tale" snowmobile route through the Lazovsky section of the Kronotsky Reserve, with the final destination being the Tumroki Tourist Base. Closing out the ranking is the Aerodrom Ranger Station, located along the middle reaches of the Kronotskaya River. From here, visitors can view the Kronotsko-Bogachevskaya tundra, home to a population of wild reindeer. The station also offers a combined water-and-hiking excursion to the Kronotsky Lagoon on the Pacific Ocean.
