A unique farm called "Rosa" in Kamchatka has welcomed a historic new arrival—the region’s very first baby camel. The exciting news was shared by the farm's manager, Angelina Kravchenko, in a recent interview with local media.

The newborn calf came into the world just a few days ago. His parents, Valya and Venya, have lived on the farm for years, but this is their first offspring. The pregnancy lasted nearly 14 months.

"I arrived at the farm in the morning and saw Valya standing there—but she wasn't alone. I spotted a tiny tail wagging beside her and realized she had finally given birth," Kravchenko recalled. "Not long after, the little one got to his feet, nestled up to his mother, and she immediately nursed him. That's a great sign, because sometimes mothers reject their young."

The family belongs to the Bactrian camel species, known for their two humps. According to Kravchenko, these animals handle extreme temperature swings remarkably well, making Kamchatka’s climate a good fit for them. For now, the calf is feeding exclusively on his mother’s milk.

"In winter, their diet is mostly hay, and in summer—freshly cut grass. We also supplement with compound feed, and their favorite treats are beets and carrots," explained the farm manager. "At birth, a camel's humps are soft and hollow. Over time, they fill with fat reserves and gradually stand upright, just like in adults."

The farm is home to a diverse menagerie: heavy-duty horses, cows, foxes, goats, raccoons, raccoon dogs, and many other animals. Now, they’ve been joined by Kamchatka’s first-ever camel calf.

Interestingly, raccoon dogs—despite their resemblance to raccoons—actually belong to the canine family. They mate for life, and after the babies are born, the male takes an active role in raising them.

Among the farm’s most mischievous residents is Semyon the raccoon. According to staff, he still loves swiping unattended items, and his playful antics haven’t stopped even after two female companions, Yulia and Eva, were brought in to keep him company.
