In Kamchatka, the order Chiroptera (bats) is represented by rare species that live on the periphery of their ranges — in conditions that are extreme for these animals. Two species of myotis are found here: Daubenton's bat and Brandt's bat, as well as the northern bat.
Bats are relatively scarce on the peninsula, although they can be encountered in many areas. Their wintering grounds in Kamchatka have not yet been documented. Typically, these animals can be observed from late June through October.
They roost in tree hollows and, occasionally, in human structures. Bats leave their shelters at dusk. During the summer, they are most active between 9:00 PM and midnight.
Bats are in need of protection everywhere, as their numbers are low and the living conditions in Kamchatka are far from favorable.
